Finding Gold in Stanley Lake
The Milky Way rises from majestic McGowen Peak as the golden starlight reflects in Stanley Lake.
Photo Story
This is one my favorite spots in Idaho. The shore of Stanley Lake, looking South to McGowen peak. I’ve been here many times but I had never taken the opportunity to view it at 2:00 in the morning. The sight of the golden galactic center reflecting in the the lake below was just amazing.
While I was taking this photo, I heard something behind me. Of course it’s pitch black and I can’t see what it is so I turn around and shone my light on a sweet little deer who was just wandering by – not bothered by me at all. The peacefulness of that moment was a perfect fit to the scene. What a sight – in both directions.
Right after taking this photo I looked to my left to see the crescent moon rising perfectly in line with length of the lake to the East. I quickly changed lenses, found my way to the West side of the beach and snapped a few pictures – all of which turned out to be terribly out of focus because I bumped the focus ring in all my excitement. Oh well, at least I have the memory of it. It was quite a sight.
