Pouring Into Jump Creek Falls

The Photo Story:

Episode 8: The last in a series of Season One. It was a challenge of alignment and timing to get this shot. I needed to find my way up a half-mile trail in order to arrive and setup by 1:30 a.m. at this exact spot where the Milky Way would align perfectly with the top of the water fall.

Goal #1: Don’t die.
Goal #2: Get the photo
Goal #3: Don’t get arrested doing it (after hours on BLM land)

Good news, I didn’t die and I was there in time to capture the moment when the Milky Way passed across the top of the falls.  It moves surprisingly quickly across the sky when there is such a narrow window of view. I was there about an hour early to setup and took about 80 photos over the course of a few hours – Yes, this effort takes a long time… The photos that I took before and after this exact shot have the Milky Way off-center by a few inches (on the photo) showing that for every 2 minute exposure, it’s moving about an inch on your screen which makes it a challenge.

Thankfully there were no bears or dragons to deal with when I got to the falls, just a little desert rat who came by to say hello.

• Canon 5D with 14mm lens
• Sky: 4 stacked, tracked exposures at 85-seconds
• Foreground: Two exposures of 3 minutes and 30 seconds

My Recommendation:
This print hangs beautifully on the wall as a Metal Print at 12×18 or larger.  No frame is necessary with the metal print as it floats off the wall just a bit and creates it’s own sense of a frame with a slight shadow.
